Finite Element Methods for Elliptic Equations Using Nonconforming Elements

A finite element method is developed for approximating the solution of the Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic operator, as a canonical example of a higher order elliptic boundary value problem. The solution is approximated by special choices of classes of discontinuous functions, piecewise polynomial functions, by virtue of a special variational formulation of the boundary value problem. The ...

Accurate Solution to Elliptic Eigenvalue Problems using Finite Elements

where Ω is an open connected subset of R with a sufficiently smooth boundary, ρ and θ are sufficiently smooth scalar functions on Ω bounded below by a positive number, and u is a function on Ω that does not vanish uniformly. This eigenvalue PDE is the standard idealization of finding the vibrational modes of a thin plate clamped at the edges, in which the stiffness of the plate is given by θ, t...

Moonshine Elements in Elliptic Cohomology

This is a historical talk about the recent confluence of two lines of research in equivariant elliptic cohomology, one concerned with connected Lie groups, the other with the finite case. These themes come together in (what seems to me remarkable) work of N. Ganter, relating replicability of McKay-Thompson series to the theory of exponential cohomology operations.

Identity elements of archaeal tRNA.

Features unique to a transfer-RNA are recognized by the corresponding tRNA-synthetase. Keeping this in view we isolate the discriminating features of all archaeal tRNA. These are our identity elements. Further, we investigate tRNA-characteristics that delineate the different orders of Archaea.

An elliptic generalization of Schur’s Pfaffian identity

We present a Pfaffian identity involving elliptic functions, whose rational limit gives a generalization of Schur’s Pfaffian identity for Pf((xj −xi)/(xj +xi)). This identity is regarded as a Pfaffian counterpart of Frobenius identity, which is an elliptic generalization of Cauchy’s determinant identity for det(1/(xi + xj)).
